Britney Spears appears to be firing an indirect shot at pop singers who have adopted her style, telling her fans on Instagram that imitation is good, but her style was authentic.

The 44-year-old singer didn’t name anyone in her lengthy Instagram post.

“A lot of girls last year have definitely done the complete image I used to have when I was younger… and yo that’s cool, but at least mine was real…,” she wrote.

She also lamented a world that does not tolerate authenticity: “I was that nerd in school that was real as hell… the world has become fake… people who are actually real get hated on… which is a shame…”

Spears then wondered whether she should try to be fake. “ok. Maybe I should try harder and get fake nails and do the fake thing. all my guys friends say just be fake.. I need a bad ass girlfriend who can teach me how to lie. I’m actually too kind in real life and that’s the problem..” she added.

To her critics, she was sarcastic: “To all the girls who say I’m History… I’M PROPHECY.”

Speaking of her earlier days as a pop star, Spears said, “I’m the original apple B school girl who did backflips and backhand springs and fell in love with people on every set I ever went to… these years were precious, so young and naive…”

“The world has been hateful to me, and I’m still standing, living, and dreaming,” she added.

She also teased pictures from Italy, but hinted that she may not share the pictures. “hopefully i will show u guys my pics in Italy soon.. I want to keep them for me though,” she wrote before adding: “PS no makeup makes you look WAY younger.”

Spears debuted in 1998 with the song “…Baby One More Time,” whose music video, featuring the pop singer in a schoolgirl uniform, became the signature image of pop music in the late 1990s.

The pop star has used Instagram to respond to critics and reflect on her past since a judge ended the conservatorship that controlled her life and finances for 13 years in November 2021. Spears described that period in her 2023 book, “The Woman in Me.”
