Burna Boy has always carried himself with the air of a misunderstood and underappreciated prodigy.

In 2013, he released his debut album, L.I.F.E – Leaving an Impact for Eternity, which was followed by thought-provoking releases like On a Spaceship in 2015 and Redemption in 2016. Outside’s confident and captivating rhythms solidified his artistic journey in 2018 and paved the way for even greater success in 2019 with the groundbreaking African Giant.

Finally, receiving a Grammy for Twice as Tall in 2020 cemented Burna Boy’s place as a trailblazer in African music, with his name frequently mentioned among the most perceptive talents in global pop culture.

Burna’s talents have not been diminished by the emotional and introspective album Love, Damini, which was released in 2022. On the contrary, his most recent hit, “Last Last,” which cleverly samples Toni Braxton, has only increased his international profile.

These remarkable accomplishments have put Burna Boy in a class of his own, and he is grateful for remaining true to his convictions. It comes as no surprise that the opening lines of his new album, I Told Them…, serve as a playful reminder to his long-time critics and observers, as he is unafraid to express his most profound thoughts.

Burna Boy expresses his excitement at proving skeptics wrong and witnessing their eventual realization of the truth. He asserts confidently that his previous statements and predictions can be traced back to his older tweets, validating his current situation.

While his previous album, Love, Damini, demonstrated his visionary and eclectic style, his latest release, I Told Them…, delves into the world of hip-hop, exuding confidence and directness.

This album is a glimpse into Burna’s future, interspersed with poignant anecdotes from his past. Burna leaves no doubt that he has entered a new realm, whether he is warning his detractors about his inevitable triumphs on songs like “On Form” or proudly listing his achievements on glamorous songs like “Big 7” and “Sittin’ on Top of the World.” On the powerful track “Thanks,” he enlists J. Cole’s talents to deliver a scathing critique of his detractors.

Burna Boy collaborates with talented newcomer Seyi Vibez to create a captivating and artistic rendition of street pop in his latest release, “Giza,” with an unrivaled ability to seamlessly incorporate diverse musical inspirations.

Burna Boy effortlessly showcases his lyrical prowess by exchanging verses with Byron Messia on “Talibans II.” The tender ballad “If I’m Lying” reveals the true heart and soul of his latest work, “I Told Them…” Burna Boy candidly confesses to moments of vulnerability on this track, which is expertly accompanied by the enchanting melodies crafted by the esteemed Steel Banglez.
