The kaiju are coming, and this time, they’re taking over your local cinema. Crunchyroll and Sony Pictures Entertainment have officially announced the limited theatrical release of Kaiju No. 8: Mission Recon, an explosive omnibus film blending a high-octane recap of the first season with a never-before-seen original episode titled Hoshina’s Day Off. The cinematic experience will crash into select theaters across the United States and Canada for three days only on April 13, 14, and 16, 2025.
This is not just a recap. It’s a full-on monster invasion.
A Monster-Sized Story: Welcome to Kafka Hibino’s World
Adapted from Naoya Matsumoto’s globally celebrated manga, Kaiju No. 8 is a bold, relentless tale set in an alternate Japan constantly terrorized by monstrous beasts known as “kaiju.” At the center of this chaos is Kafka Hibino, a thirty-something everyman working a soul-sucking job in kaiju clean-up until fate shatters the mundane. After a life-altering transformation, Kafka becomes a kaiju himself, Kaiju No. 8, and secretly begins pursuing his dream of joining the Defense Force alongside his childhood friend and elite officer, Mina Ashiro.
With the help of his ambitious, sharp-shooting junior, Reno Ichikawa, Kafka balances his monstrous secret and humanity, striving to pass the rigorous Defense Force exams. But when an enigmatic intelligent kaiju strikes a Defense Force base, Kafka is faced with an agonizing choice that could shift the balance of power forever.
An Omnibus with a Twist: What Is Mission Recon?
Kaiju No. 8: Mission Recon is not just a highlight reel. It is a two-hour cinematic experience (runtime: 119 minutes) meticulously designed for both loyal fans and curious newcomers. The film is split into two major sections:
- Part One: A fiery, emotionally charged recap of Season 1, delivering Kafka’s evolution, Mina’s rise, and the emergence of the terrifying Kaiju No. 9, all packed into a pulse-pounding narrative.
- Part Two: An original exclusive episode titled Hoshina’s Day Off, featuring Vice-Captain Soshiro Hoshina like you’ve never seen him before in chill mode. Kind of.
In Hoshina’s Day Off, Defense Force rookie Reno Ichikawa finds himself confused about what to do with a rare day off. When he spots the enigmatic Hoshina sneaking off with an oddly suspicious vibe, Reno and Iharu team up for an impromptu tail mission. What starts as harmless curiosity spirals into an absurd, unexpected turn of events. Let’s just say, you’ll never look at “off-duty” quite the same way again.
The Team Behind the Monsters: Elite Production, Legendary Creatives
This kaiju-fueled thrill ride would not be complete without its stellar team of anime industry heavyweights:
- Directors: Shigeyuki Miya (Onihei) and Tomomi Kamiya (Spy x Family)
- Character Design and Chief Animation Director: Tetsuya Nishio (Naruto, Jin-Roh)
- Monster Design: Hirotaka Tokuda
- Studio: Production I.G (Ghost in the Shell, Haikyuu!!)
- Music Composer: Yuta Bandoh
The kaiju designs are reportedly supervised in collaboration with Studio Khara, the legendary studio behind the Rebuild of Evangelion series. Expect grotesque, surreal beasts that push the limits of animation and imagination.
The Soundtrack: OneRepublic Enters the Chat
Pop-rock royalty OneRepublic returns to the Kaiju No. 8 universe with a brand new ending theme song, “Invincible,” under Universal Music. The group previously contributed “Nobody” as the ending for the anime’s first season, and “Invincible” promises a rousing, emotional send-off to the cinematic event.
The song makes its debut during Hoshina’s Day Off, offering fans a reflective, high-energy closer to the otherwise adrenaline-packed saga.

Whether you’re a purist or prefer dubbed anime bliss, Mission Recon has you covered. The film will be screened in both:
