Former 1950s actress and And God Created Woman star Brigitte Bardot died at the age of 91 over the weekend in France. Her animal rights organization honored her, but many people have slammed her for racist and homophobic remarks, including calling homosexuality a “plague!”
Roan shared an Instagram Story on Monday, praising the impact Bardot had on her inspiration for the 2023 “red wine supernova.”

This ‘Pink Pony Club’ singer tribute to Bardot triggered many reactions on social media. One person responded, “Chappell Roan, please check out Brigitte Bardot’s Wikipedia page.” Another person stated, “Chappell Roan really is the whole ass weirdo. I highly doubt her activist schtick on the web doesn’t know about the racist, Islamophobic, anti-immigrant, misogynistic Bardot who stood up for a pedophile, and that’s terrible. F*ck both of them.”
Criticism continued. One person wrote, “Chappell Roan sending condolences to a woman who expressed hate for all minorities and called the actresses who spoke out against sexual harassment in the #MeToo movement ‘hypocrites’ and ‘ridiculous.'”
Roan eventually removed the tribute due to criticism of Bardot’s stance as an LGBTQ+ artist. She also mentioned: “Holy shit i did not know all that insane shit Ms. Bardot stood for obvs I do not condone this. very disappointing to learn.”
