Coven Academy First Look: Freeform’s New Witchy Drama Is Giving Serious ‘Legacies’ Meets ‘Charmed’ Energy

A first teaser trailer for Coven Academy, Tim Federle’s new teen drama series, was released on Thursday.

The show premieres October 1 on Freeform at 8 p.m. ET/PT, with the entire season available for viewing the next day on Disney+, Hulu, and Freeform On Demand. Presented in a serialized and binge-worthy format, the story will unfold in quick, pulsing episodes.

In the mystical world of New Orleans, Coven Academy is about three teenage witches and their warlock peers attending an elite magic boarding school where power is money, secrets cost lives, and attraction is a weakness. Having to choose sides in the struggle between supernatural powers and forbidden love, the characters must decide how far they are willing to go to defend both the city and themselves.

The teaser trailer featuring Olivia Rodrigo’s song “Brutal” suggests growing tensions within the group stemming from one character’s secrets and the other’s ambitious plans.

Among the main actors are Malina Pauli Weissman (A Series of Unfortunate Events) playing Briar, a witch recently transferred from New York; Malachi Barton (Camp Rock 3, Zombies 4: Dawn of the Vampires) playing Jake, a warlock with an attitude problem; Jordan Leftwich (The Family Switch) playing Sasha, a student with the gift of reading minds; Ora Duplass (Their Town) playing Tegan, a witch with time-bending abilities; Louis Thresher (Boarders) playing Ollie, a vampire recently transformed; and Tiffani Thiessen (White Collar, 90210) playing Miss Graves, the head of the school.

The cast includes Devon Sawa (Chucky, Final Destination), a special guest star who plays Mr. Cole, a warlock professor, as well as Swayam Bhatia, Brendon Tremblay, Keegan Connor Tracy, BJ Harrison, and Nathaniel Logan McIntyre, who are featured regularly.

Coven Academy was created by Federle, who has credits such as High School Musical: The Musical: The Series and an upcoming sequel to Romy and Michele under his belt, and who serves as an executive producer of the series alongside Darren Swimmer, Todd Slavkin, Amanda Row, and Bronwyn North-Reist.
