In a surprise move, just one day after announcing their highly anticipated 2024 tour, Drake and J. Cole dropped a game-changing music video for their hit collaboration, “First Person Shooter.”
Directed by Gibson Hazard, the visually stunning video takes viewers on a wild ride filled with meme culture references, CGI effects, and nod-worthy pop culture moments.
The video kicks off in an office setting, with Brian Baumgartner, famously known as Kevin from the beloved sitcom “The Office,” engrossed in the addictive beats of the single while secretly playing a first-person shooter game on his work computer. When he receives a call from “The CEO,” he assures them that everyone is hard at work, when in reality, the rappers themselves, Drake and J. Cole, are engaged in a lively table tennis match in a nearby conference room.
As the video unfolds, viewers are treated to a captivating display of recreated memes, including the iconic Spider-Man pointing at the Spider-Man image. The rappers also pay homage to their own viral moments, such as Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo playing chess from their Louis Vuitton campaign.
Drake takes the opportunity to celebrate his monumental achievement of tying Michael Jackson’s record for the most number-one singles among solo males, with “First Person Shooter” debuting at the top of Billboard’s Hot 100 chart. In the video, he dons a white glove, reminiscent of Jackson’s signature accessory, as he showcases his dance moves.
To further emphasize the milestone, Drake shared a photoshopped picture of Jackson wearing his label OVO’s merchandise, captioning it “Mooooooooood” and tagging J. Cole.
The success of “First Person Shooter” extends beyond the single itself. All 23 tracks from the duo’s collaborative album, “For All The Dogs,” made their way into the top 50 singles chart during its first tracking week. This remarkable achievement solidifies Drake and J. Cole’s influence and dominance in the music industry.
The “First Person Shooter” music video is a true feast for the eyes, combining innovative visuals, meme culture, and nods to iconic figures.
Drake and J. Cole have once again demonstrated their ability to captivate audiences with their creativity, cementing their status as trailblazers in rap.
