Federal Judge Dismisses Matt Kalil’s Privacy Lawsuit Against Haley Kalil

On Thursday, U.S. District Judge Patrick Schiltz dismissed the invasion of privacy suit brought by former NFL offensive lineman Matt Kalil against his former wife, model and influencer Haley Kalil, because he found her sexual descriptions about their married life made during a Twitch livestream were discussing something of genuine public interest, as stated in the order.

According to the order, Haley Kalil made the comments while talking about her marriage and divorce, and Judge Schiltz said she was talking about herself, not Matt Kalil. In his view, the law usually protects speech about oneself, even when it exposes facts about another person.

Matt Kalil, 36, demanded at least $ 75,000 in damages in the suit he filed in January in federal court in Minnesota, court documents analyzed by TMZ Sports show. He said the comments hurt his efforts to stay out of the limelight after his football career ended and made derogatory comments about his family.

The suit was based on a November 2025 livestream with content creator Marlon Garcia, according to the judge’s order. Haley Kalil, 33, did not mention Matt Kalil by name in her comments; however, she described him as “the greatest guy in the world” and said the two remained friends, according to the order. Moreover, she mentioned therapy sessions and doctors, mentioned anatomical incompatibility which, according to her, was the biggest reason for the divorce, and said that every attempt at intercourse made her cry.

Under Minnesota law, publicizing private facts is an invasion of privacy if it would be highly offensive to a reasonable person and is not of legitimate public interest. Judge Schiltz said in his order that Matt Kalil has made a plausible claim about the first part of the definition, meaning the question of public interest remains.

The court acknowledged that both individuals were public figures: Matt Kalil was the fourth overall pick in the 2012 NFL draft and was selected to the Pro Bowl team. Choosing private life after football did not change his status, the judge wrote in his order. Furthermore, he says he would rule differently if the comments Haley Kalil made were just the purest kind of gossip. However, he says they took place when she was talking about her trauma and decision to divorce. Judge Schiltz does not address her First Amendment claim in the order.

Haley Kalil gave the statement after the order, saying she feels relieved and hopes her case will inspire other women to share their stories fearlessly. Ryan Saba, Matt Kalil’s lawyer, has not yet revealed whether his client will take further steps.
