Kylie Brewer addressed white viewers in a TikTok video and told them that when they go along with racism, they become part of the problem and need to “stop being a coward.”
The video bears the name, “White complicity is just as bad as overt racism …”
In her video, Kylie Brewer explained, “What I mean by that is that if you are a white person, it is significantly easier to go along with racism. And however you wanna justify that to yourself, it’s much easier to do that than to interfere.”
It is because of how the system has been set up.
“Because the system has been set up to suppress any different type of thinking, to suppress inclusivity and diversity, and to continue to let white people feel the only power they have is over people of color,” she noted. “That is where the effectiveness lies.”
Brewer said that the notion that no individual can make a difference helps perpetuate the harmfulness.
“Because if you can convince people, especially white people, that their individual voices do not matter and that their individual actions do not matter, then that is what allows the worst atrocities in human history to occur,” she added.
“It is our responsibility as white people to undo racism,” she stressed.
Then Kylie Brewer addressed white viewers who claim they can’t do more.
“So whatever excuse you tell yourself about why you, you know, you can’t do more, you can’t say something because ‘it’s hard’ or whatever, just know that you are contributing to the problem, so stand up and fix it,” she said.
“And that is the only way that we are going to be able to break the system from the inside: it takes numbers, and it takes bravery,” Brewer concluded. “So stop being a coward.”
