Former Real Housewives of Atlanta Star NeNe Leakes Faces Legal Battle Over Alleged Unpaid Rent

NeNe Leakes, the former star of Bravo’s hit reality series “The Real Housewives of Atlanta,” is embroiled in a tense legal battle with her landlord, MPG-Sugarloaf, over an alleged $22,000 in unpaid rent for her now-closed Swagg Boutique. Court documents obtained by InTouch reveal that the landlord was granted a five-figure sum due to overdue rent, leading to a summons being served to Truist Bank.

The summons directed Truist Bank to “immediately hold all money, including wages, and other property, except what is known to be exempt, including property in safe deposit boxes or similar property that you hold, belonging to the Defendant named above beginning on the day of service of this summons and including the next five days.” This legal action stems from an August 2023 lawsuit filed by MPG-Sugarloaf, which asserts that NeNe signed a lease for the boutique in 2017.

During the pandemic, NeNe shut down the store but briefly reopened it in 2022 before finally closing it for good. Following the store’s closure, the landlord claimed that NeNe failed to pay the outstanding $22,000 in rent.

In response to the lawsuit, NeNe took to social media to share her side of the story, stating that her late husband, Gregg Leakes, had signed the lease. “Gregg signed the lease, not me! He ain’t here,” she wrote, suggesting she was not directly responsible for the debt.

Despite this, NeNe did not present her case in court. Her landlord claimed that legal documents were served to NeNe at her $1 million Atlanta condo, but she remained silent. Consequently, the judge issued a default decision in November 2023, awarding MPG-Sugarloaf a total of $25,631, which includes the $22,000 in unpaid rent plus interest.
