Crunchyroll revealed today that they have acquired season two of Witch Hat Atelier, the wonderful anime series adapted from Kamome Shirahama’s highly acclaimed manga. Season two will be available for worldwide streaming on Crunchyroll, except in Asia.
Still thinking about that season one ending? Well, season two continues immediately after the Brimmed Caps attack the apprentices in the Serpentback Cave. Manga readers know that this storyline is significant, and soon enough, they will realize why.
Witch Hat Atelier is set in a world where only witches can use magic, which is a strictly guarded secret. Coco is a young girl aspiring to make her own spells. Due to her mishap with forbidden magic, she ends up being taught magic by Qifrey, an elegant and enigmatic witch who fixes her mistakes. It is a heartwarming tale about children fighting through despair to hope.
What is unique about this series is the way magic is used. In the world of Witch Hat Atelier, magic is not shown through flashy displays and screaming. Rather, spells are drawn in the pages of the book itself, making this whole anime a love letter to art. With Shirahama’s storybook-like narration style, season one attracted both newcomers and manga fans.
And now some info about the production. BUG FILMS animated Witch Hat Atelier, and its director is Ayumu Watanabe (Summer Time Rendering, Komi Can’t Communicate). Its music was composed by Yuka Kitamura, known for working on Elden Ring, Bloodborne, and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. The crew is great in general: Shun Shinohara (Heavenly Delusion, Zom 100) – assistant director, Hiroshi Seko (Dan Da Dan, Jujutsu Kaisen) – series composition, Kairi Unabara (Spy x Family Season 3) – character designer and chief animation director, Ryota Goto (Suzume) – art director, Naomi Nakano (Solo Leveling) – color designer, and Tadashi Kitaoka (Love Live! Superstar!!) – director of photography.
The manga, launched in 2016 by Kodansha, is still ongoing and has sold more than 7 million copies worldwide. It received the Eisner Award and the Harvey Award.
Season one is already available to stream on Crunchyroll with subtitles and dubs, making it a perfect opportunity to relive the series ahead of season two. There is no announcement of its premiere date yet.
