Walt Disney Animation Studios and Pan-African entertainment company Kugali have collaborated on the highly anticipated animated series “Iwájú,” which will premiere exclusively on Disney+ on February 28th.
The film “Iwájú” takes place in a futuristic Lagos, Nigeria, and tells the story of Tola, a young girl from a privileged island, and her tech-savvy best friend, Kole. This six-part series, helmed by Kugali filmmakers including director Olufikayo Ziki Adeola, tells a story of discovery, secrets, and danger, inspired by Lagos’ vibrant spirit.
Simisola Gbadamosi, Dayo Okeniyi, Femi Branch, Siji Soetan, and Weruche Opia star in the series, which is produced by Christina Chen of Disney Animation and written by Adeola and Halima Hudson. Adeola described the magical journey of blending Lagos’ cultural richness with futuristic imagination, resulting in a one-of-a-kind fusion of tradition and futurism.
On February 28th, Disney+ will premiere “Iwájú: A Day Ahead,” a documentary special filmed across three continents. This insightful documentary tells the inspiring story of Kugali’s founders and how they made their dream a reality by collaborating with Walt Disney Animation Studios. The documentary, directed by Megan Harding and executive produced by Amy Astley and Beth Hoppe, showcases the limitless possibilities that arise when talent meets opportunity.
The release date and distribution platform for “Iwájú” in select regions, including Nigeria, will be announced soon. The film premieres in the US on February 28th.
