British pop singer Jorja Smith has unveiled the name of her new album, titled What the Odds, to be released on August 21st.
The album features collaborations with Jorja’s regular producer, P2J, as well as appearances by Afrobeats sensation Wizkid and British grime artist Devlin. The latter has collaborated with Jorja on a reworked version of her single “This City,” titled “London City.”
The new record has emerged quite naturally for Jorja, who had no special plans while making the music, according to Billboard. Collaborating with her producer P2J, they started experimenting, exploring UK garage, grime, and funky/funky house/Afro house, and the rest followed.
According to Jorja herself, the album’s music is rather uplifting, while the lyrics sometimes become a little sad. It talks about maturity, love, relationships, loss, and friendship, and all this in general, as the artist matures and understands more about life. Jorja believed her intuition this time, so the listeners will feel it in the songs.
As part of the promotion of the new album, the artist has released a single titled “Alive” featuring Wizkid. The song combines funky, playful instrumentation with a softer background, where Jorja’s harmonies lead into a verse by Wizkid.
The music video presents the two artists singing this song in a romantic atmosphere.
