Kat Dennings Says Her 6-Hour “Mad Max: Fury Road” Audition With Tom Hardy Was “An Acting Class, If It Was The Worst Day Of Your Life”

Kat Dennings shared her experience about her long-lasting audition for the role in Mad Max: Fury Road, calling it “an acting class, if it was the worst day of your life.”

In her TikTok video, she said she was inspired by actor Michael Fassbender, who talked about his audition for the film.

“Okay, so I saw this clip of incredible actor Michael Fassbender talking about his audition for Mad Max: Fury Road. And I thought, what better time to talk about my audition for Mad Max: Fury Road?” Dennings said. “They were having chemistry reads, which basically means they will pair two actors that are both testing for roles together to kind of co-audition. So my audition was with Tom Hardy, who, you may remember, ended up getting the role.”

The whole audition lasted for six hours, as Dennings noted.

“This audition took six hours. And like Michael Fassbender says in his interview with Josh Horowitz, I highly recommend you watch it because it is amazing,” Dennings said. “George Miller had this other man in the room with him, who was his, I guess his acting coach or his sort of co director or something. Um, George Miller didn’t say much. This guy kind of did all the talking, and the dialogue was a couple of pages and kind of vague. And basically what happened was an acting class. If it was, um, the worst day of your life. At one point they had us switch roles. They had the camera and had us, like, running around the corner.”

One exercise in particular was hard for Dennings to cope with.

“The worst part of it, I do believe, was when the acting coach told us to say the lines without saying the lines, encouraging us to just make noises instead of the lines. And I was dying,” she said.

While Dennings struggled with the task, Hardy managed well.

“I mean, Tom Hardy, he really took to this exercise. Like, he was able to be extremely free and come up with very creative ways of doing these lines. We broke for lunch in the middle of it, so that was cool,” she said.

Dennings never mentioned the feedback George Miller gave her during the audition, but she admits she knew right away she wouldn’t get the role in Mad Max: Fury Road.

But the story got even more interesting after the audition, as she added.

“The best part of the story, though, is at the end,” Dennings said. “So when it was finally over, this is before I had a car. So my plan was to just, like, walk to the corner and call a cab, or ask my, like, mom to come pick me up, or my friend or whatever. And Tom Hardy heard that I didn’t have a car, and he said, oh, I’ll just take you home. I was like, uh, okay. I mean, we just spent six hours together, and you seem very nice, so let’s do it. He drove me home. He was so lovely.”

Even Hardy met her family, as Dennings mentioned.

“We get to my house, which was my parents’ house, cause I still lived at home with my parents, and he came inside, and he met my mom, and he was like, oh, what a nice house. She’s like, oh, come on in. And I was like, alright, Tom, well, this is a very special day. I hope you move further in this experience, cause I know that I’m not going to,” Dennings said. “I went back to the converted garage where I lived, put my pajamas on, took a nap. A few hours later, I go back into the main house, and Tom Hardy is still there, having tea with my mother and just chatting it up.”

Dennings finished the video praising her former scene partner.

“So I can’t say enough about Tom Hardy. I will be a fan of his for life,” Dennings said. “I think he’s a wonderful person, and my mom still talks about him. So that’s my Mad Max audition experience. Bye. Bye.”
