In recent developments, actress DeWanda Wise has expressed a keen interest in portraying Ororo Munroe, better known as Storm, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). This revelation comes after Wise’s previous near-entry into the MCU, where she was cast as Maria Rambeau in 2019’s “Captain Marvel.” Unfortunately, due to scheduling conflicts with her role in Netflix’s “She’s Gotta Have It,” she had to exit the project, leading to Lashana Lynch taking over the part.
In a March 2024 interview with The Movie Dweeb, Wise candidly shared her aspirations, stating, “[Storm] is the only Marvel character I’m interested in… it’s the only Marvel character I’ve ever been interested in.” She further added, “I think we’re going to single-handedly make that happen, and I thank you for that.”
The character of Storm has a rich cinematic history, with Halle Berry famously bringing the weather-controlling mutant to life in four of Fox’s X-Men films. Later, Alexandra Shipp portrayed a younger version of Storm in “X-Men: Apocalypse” (2016) and “Dark Phoenix” (2019). With Marvel Studios regaining the rights to the X-Men characters following Disney’s acquisition of 20th Century Fox, fans have been eagerly anticipating the integration of mutants into the MCU. While specific plans for the X-Men’s introduction remain under wraps, Wise’s interest adds an exciting dimension to the ongoing casting speculations.
As of now, Marvel Studios has not made any official announcements regarding the casting of Storm or the broader inclusion of X-Men characters in upcoming MCU projects.
However, DeWanda Wise’s enthusiasm and public expression of interest have certainly sparked conversations among fans and industry insiders alike.
