Mask Girl, which is set to premiere on Netflix on August 18th, is setting the stage for its intriguing story with three main posters and a new trailer.
The trailer immediately captures viewers’ attention, with the main character Kim Mo-Mi accepting her sins in a chilling voice. What follows is a roller coaster ride through Mo-Mi’slife, from her unassuming life as an office worker to becoming a popular cam model masked girl, and eventually ending up as Prisoner Number 1047, who appears repentant but still dreams of escaping. This rapid succession of her various identities leaves viewers curious about the mysterious story behind her many masks.
Three actors – Ko Hyun-Jung, Nana, and a new talent yet to be revealed – portray Kim Mo-Mi at different stages of her life in an impressive display of talent. Each actor brings a distinct color to this character as she evolves throughout the series.
The suspenseful series also features a colorful cast of characters. Here’s a rundown of the key players.
Kim Mo-Mi: This mysterious character, who is forced to live three lives under three different names—Kim Mo-Mi the corporate employee, showgirl A-reum, and Prisoner Number 1047—enjoys the praise and adoration of her online audience, even though her life is unhappy away from the camera because of her unusual appearance. She becomes a murderer as a result of an unexpected event, giving her a turbulent life yet another identity.
Ju Oh-Nam, played by Ahn Jae-hong, is an office worker whose only pastime is watching internet broadcasts after work. When he realizes Mask Girl is his coworker Kim Mo-Mi, he develops a fixation that takes over his life. Ahn describes his character as “a company employee who wants to erase his presence during the day and show his presence in his own world at night.” The actor focused on portraying “a man’s heart that started off in the wrong direction right from the start,” building anticipation for his portrayal of the character’s hidden depths.
Kim Kyung-Ja: She is a mother whose entire world revolves around her son, as played by Yeom Hye-ran in The Glory. When her son goes missing, she embarks on a relentless search to find him. “I hoped that Kim Kyung-Ja’svengeancewould not be motivated solely by her motherhood,” says Yeom. I wanted to include a variety of complex conflicts arising from her age, religion, and other beliefs, and I had many discussions about these conflicts, which arise as she rushes towards a large and clear goal known as revenge.” Her nuanced analysis has piqued my interest in the character.
Director Kim Yong-Hoon describes these characters as “injured, marginalized individuals,” each entangled in the web of a murder mystery. The ambiguous narrative is enhanced by the blurred lines between good and evil.
Mask Girl is set to redefine mystery-thrillers with its layered characters and intricate plot. Mask Girl’s true identity will be revealed on Netflix beginning August 18th.
