The House voted 216-209 to reinstate Pelosi as the speaker of the US House of Representatives. Five Democrats chose not to support her with two voting for lawmakers who were not running, while three others voted “present.” This comes as a new Congress takes office amid political uncertainty with Senate control undecided in the face of a Republican fight looming over presidential election results.

“Therefore, the honorable Nancy Pelosi of the state of California, having received a majority of the votes cast, is duly elected Speaker of the House of Representatives for the 117th Congress.”
After initially abstaining Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC) and Cori Bush just joined the rest of the squad in voting for Pelosi. It’s a disappointing turn of events and has people wondering if we have independent left that is willing to challenge the corporate corruption in the Democratic party.
AOC on vote for Pelosi : “In a time when the Republican Party is attempting an electoral coup and trying to overturn the results of our election, this is not just about being united as a party. It’s about being united as people who have basic respect for the rule of law.”
Final Tally:
- 216 – Pelosi
- 209 – McCarthy
- 2 – Other
- 3 – Present
