Lionsgate announced on January 30 that Nia Long, known for her work in “Best Man” and “You People,” will play Katherine Jackson in the upcoming Michael Jackson theatrical biopic, “Michael.”
The film, set to be released worldwide on April 18, 2025, offers an honest portrayal of the King of Pop, embracing both the renowned entertainer’s accomplishments and sorrows.
The biopic, directed by Antoine Fuqua and produced by Oscar-winning GK Films’ Graham King, dives into Michael Jackson’s human side, personal challenges, and unquestionable creative talent.
Jaafar Jackson, the late music icon’s nephew, takes on the role of his renowned uncle, embodying the essence of Michael Jackson’s legacy. The script, written by three-time Oscar nominee John Logan, provides a comprehensive look at the multidimensional artist.
Nia Long, who most recently appeared in the Netflix comedy “You People” and the Peacock limited series “The Best Man: The Final Chapters,” plays Katherine Jackson. Academy Award candidate Colman Domingo joins the cast as Katherine’s husband, Joe Jackson.
Lionsgate, with its enormous domestic distribution network, will bring the film to audiences in the United States. Universal Pictures International will handle distribution in all markets except Japan, where Lionsgate will take over.
Nia Long’s remarkable resume, which includes her roles in the Netflix thriller “Fatal Affair” and the Apple TV+ feature film “The Banker,” demonstrates her versatility as an actress. Her cooperation with Colman Domingo, who was praised for his work in “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” heightens the expectation for this film.
