Olivia Munn Opens Up About Her Battle with Breast Cancer and Advocates for Early Detection

Olivia Munn, well known for her appearances in “New Girl” and “X-Men: Apocalypse,” opened up about her battle with breast cancer, highlighting the necessity of taking preventative steps.

The 43-year-old actress revealed that she was diagnosed with the condition in February 2023 but chose to keep her fight quiet until now. Munn revealed in an emotional Instagram post on Wednesday her choice to get a double mastectomy after a risk assessment test that eventually saved her life.

Munn’s decision to undertake genetic testing, which included 90 different cancer genes, originally produced comforting findings, with all tests coming back negative, including BRCA, the well-known breast cancer gene. Munn, encouraged by the outcome, had a moment of relief with her sister, Sara Potts. However, a routine mammography later revealed the shocking truth of her condition.

Despite the news, Munn maintained a firm demeanor, admitting her limited time for emotional processing in the face of the need for clear-headed attention. Dr. Thaïs Aliabadi, her OBGYN, conducted a Breast Cancer Risk Assessment Score based on age, familial history, and childbirth timing, which she appreciated. This evaluation led to a critical MRI, which verified the existence of Luminal B malignancy in both breasts.

Munn expressed thankfulness for the timely intervention and recognized the blessing of having options as she reflected on her quick transition from a state of normalcy to a 10-hour operation. She urged other women to prioritize their health and campaigned for preventive measures such as regular Breast Cancer Risk Assessment Scores and early tests for those at a risk of more than 20%.
