Cecile Richards, the former president of Planned Parenthood and a prominent advocate for women’s rights, passed away on January 20, 2025, at the age of 67, after a courageous battle with glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer.
Richards led Planned Parenthood from 2006 to 2018, significantly increasing its membership, donor support, and political influence while steadfastly advocating for reproductive rights. Her tenure was marked by resilience in the face of political challenges, transforming the organization into a formidable force for reproductive health and rights in America.
Born in Waco, Texas, Richards was the daughter of former Texas Governor Ann Richards. She began her career as a labor organizer for low-wage workers and co-founded America Votes, an organization aimed at coordinating and promoting progressive issues. After leaving Planned Parenthood, she co-founded Supermajority, a political action group dedicated to empowering women in politics.
In November 2024, President Joe Biden awarded Richards the Presidential Medal of Freedom, recognizing her unwavering commitment to civil rights and social justice.
Following her passing, singer-songwriter Olivia Rodrigo paid tribute to Richards, stating, “She was a warrior for reproductive freedom and an inspiration to me and so many. May her resilience in the face of injustice be a guiding light for us all.”
Richards is survived by her husband, Kirk Adams, their three children, and a grandson. Her family emphasized her lifelong dedication to social progress and encouraged others to honor her legacy by continuing her work in advocating for reproductive rights and women’s leadership.
