Olivia Rodrigo has released a new song, “Bad Idea Right?” after teasing new music earlier this week. The song comes after her upcoming album’s lead single, “Vampire.”

The juxtaposition between “Bad Idea Right?” and “Vampire” is striking. While the latter exudes a grandiose and emotive quality through its piano ballad, Rodrigo’s most recent release possesses a lively and spirited energy.

Through the lyrics, she portrays a scenario where she reunites with her former lover, despite knowing it is ill-advised. Rodrigo effortlessly showcases her talent for crafting impactful lyrics, while her frequent collaborator, Daniel Nigro, expertly handles the production with his skilled touch.

“[It] started with us making a joke song about me hooking up with an ex-boyfriend, but then we realized we were actually onto something. We were throwing the weirdest things at the wall — in one of the choruses there’s a part that sounds like an instrument in the background, but it’s me gradually screaming louder and louder,” Rodrigo states.

In crafting the music video to complement the song, Rodrigo enlisted the artistic prowess of Petra Collins, a renowned director with an extensive portfolio of visually stunning works.

Notably, Collins had previously helmed the captivating “Vampire” video, showcasing her undeniable talent in the realm of cinematic storytelling.

The music video accompanying “Bad Idea Right?” draws inspiration from the horror-comedy genre of ’90s B-movies. Rodrigo’s gripping odyssey to her former lover’s residence can only be characterized as a bewildering blend of surrealism and whimsical absurdity.

Rodrigo also appears to reference scenes from modern hit shows such as ‘Glee‘ and ‘Euphoria‘ in the music video for her new single, “Bad Idea Right?”.

The highly anticipated sophomore album, Guts, by Olivia Rodrigo is slated for release on September 8th. With utmost assurance, Rodrigo vows that this opus shall perpetuate her remarkable repertoire of adolescent-infused melodies.
