Despite all odds, a young Texas girl born in a prison graduated as one of the top students in her class and will be attending Harvard University in the fall to further her education.
According to the Houston Chronicle, Aurora Castner graduated third in her class from Conroe High School just 18 years after being born inside the Galveston County Jail.
The new graduate began her application essay to the Ivy League school with “I was born in prison,” according to the Chronicle. She got accepted through early action.
When Castner was born, her mother was already incarcerated, and she connected with her mother since the day her father picked her up from jail as an infant and raised her alone.
With the help of the Conroe neighborhood, Castner got to fulfill her dream of attending Harvard and pursuing a career in law.
The staff at her primary school introduced her to a community mentoring program where adult volunteers have lunch with young students at least once a week and offer advice on their needs, aspirations, worries, and future. Castner’s relationship with his student was typical of many that last for years.
Mona Hamby, according to the Chronicle, has been in Castner’s life for a decade. “I was given a paper about her. Her hero was Rosa Parks, her favorite food was Dairy Queen tacos, and she loved to read. “I thought she sounded like a bright little girl,” Hamby told the Chronicle. “I still have that paper.” Hamby, like Castner, was raised without a mother.
“She told me, ‘I’ve been to jail.'” “No, that can’t be right,” she said of the then-8-year-old. “I knew I couldn’t just go to lunch with this kid once a week; she needed more,” Hamby told the Chronicle.
According to the publication, Hamby took Castner to her first haircut at a salon, assisted her in getting glasses, and even took her on a tour of Harvard’s campus in March 2022. “After that trip, I saw her love for the school intensify,” Hamby said.
The adolescent stated that she found value in her life both before and after joining the mentorship program.
“It was a very different environment than I grew up in, and that’s not a bad thing,” Castner told the Chronicle. “Everything Mona taught me was very valuable in the same way that everything I went through before Mona was very valuable.”
In addition to helping the teen receive dental care, other members of the community allowed her to attend summer camp. James Wallace, a professor at Boston University, reportedly provided Castner with Harvard application advice. “He helped me to tell my story in the best way possible,” Castner said.
However, Castner’s dedication to academic rigor was self-driven. She joined the Academy for Health and Science Professions in her high school, which aids in preparing students’ minds for careers in science and mathematics, as she grew up a strong reader at a young age.
As this Saturday’s graduation draws near, graduation festivities have already begun at the University of Alabama. It serves as a springboard for even greater things for 16-year-old LeAnna Roberts.
Summa cum laude, the top student in her class, will graduate with a bachelor’s degree in biology in 2023 while wearing more than 12 honors ropes and tassels.
“I’m incredibly thrilled; it hasn’t really sunk in yet, but I’m incredibly thrilled. My family is coming to support me, of course, and they are all very proud of me, Roberts told the Tuscaloosa News.
The Tuscaloosa native is one of the school’s youngest graduates, having graduated when he was far too young to drive or vote. Roberts’ next task is to complete the year-long medical school application process.
According to the school’s website, she stated, “I am currently preparing to take the Medical College Admission Test next month so I can begin the application process for medical schools.
The future orthopedic surgeon candidate is still enrolled at UA with a diploma and an associate’s degree. Following graduation, she plans to enroll in graduate-level classes with a focus on health care.
She plans to graduate from the STEM Path to MBA program in May 2024. The teen’s ultimate goal is to make a positive contribution to the medical industry, with a focus on rural healthcare disparities.
In an interview with WTVM 13, Roberts stated, “I want to become a surgeon to close the gaps in health care for so many people nationally and internationally.”
Roberts has been advancing with distinction since 2021. Due to dual enrollment, she was able to finish high school early, and on the same day she turned 15, she received an associate’s degree in biology from Shelton State Community College as well as her high school diploma from Central High School.
She later transferred to the University of Alabama to complete her bachelor’s degree in pre-medicine.
Roberts stated to WVTM 13 in 2021, “I’ve always chased a challenge because it’s great to do something that other people haven’t.”
Despite being younger than her classmates, Roberts said she has felt right at home at the University of Arizona. Because most people are unaware of the age difference, the 16-year-old considers herself to be a typical student, keeping busy and navigating college life with her peers. She has also never let her age limit or obstruct her efforts to achieve her objectives.
While she is still a teen, Roberts’ frequently demanding schedule does not prevent her from remaining enthusiastic about learning.
“Balance has undoubtedly been the key. I’ve been able to succeed so far by balancing extracurricular activities and remaining focused in class,” she told WVTM 13.
As if she weren’t already an inspiration, the adolescent student eagerly balanced her coursework with community involvement.
Roberts told Local 12 News, “I am a volunteer at Druid City Hospital and have volunteered with Al’s Pals and Vision Days during my two years as an undergraduate student.
In addition, Roberts recently published an abstract on health disparities and literacy in Black Belt communities with Dr. Avani Shah, an associate professor in the UA School of Social Work.
The parental support for Roberts is unwavering despite her unusual matriculation. The accomplishments of their daughter were the source of great pride for parents Lee and Latonya Roberts.
Every day, Mother Latonya looked forward to picking up her intelligent daughter from school and hearing about her day.
“I always enjoyed hearing about her day.” Even though some days were more difficult than others, the proud mother always saw the bright side of things, according to WVTM 13.
LeAnna is grateful for her family’s support in allowing her to achieve her goals.
According to local New Orleans news station WWL-TV, Dennis Barnes, a high school student from New Orleans, is currently the holder of the largest amount of scholarship money awarded. In order to officially recognize Barnes’ new record, the school contacted Guinness.
More than $9 million in scholarships have been awarded to Barnes, who has been accepted into 125 colleges and universities.
In an effort to set a high standard for college admissions, Barnes stated that he submitted his college applications in August. Barnes told WWL-TV that he received a ton of scholarship offers in addition to decision letters, which were overflowing in his mailbox.
He beat the prior record holder, who was also from Louisiana. A senior from Lafayette got $8.7 million in scholarships from universities all over the country in 2019.
Barnes, a dual student at Southern University of New Orleans with a cumulative GPA of 4.98, is gaining college credit while remaining a high school student. His ultimate goal with his education is to receive a dual degree in Criminal Justice and Computer Science.
He has held the position of Executive President of the National Honor Society outside of the classroom and has earned straight A’s since the first grade.
The New Orleans native has received the “Diplomas en Espaol” award from the Institute Cervantes on behalf of the Spanish Ministry of Education, Culture, and Sports for his proficiency in Spanish. Maria Page, the Honorary Consul of Spain in New Orleans, presented him with the Jose Luis Baos Award for Excellence in the Spanish Language, which he also recently accepted.
On May 2, Dennis Barnes is expected to reveal his next college destination. He claims that his short-term objective is to reach $10 million in scholarship funding. The Frederick J. Sigur Civic Center will host Barnes’ graduation on May 24th.
