Paramount+ Releases Trailer For “Martin” Spinoff “The Varnell Hill Show”

Paramount+ revealed the teaser trailer for The Varnell Hill Show, a spinoff of Martin. The series premieres Tuesday, September 1, exclusively on Paramount+.

Around three decades after you met him onscreen for the first time, Tommy Davidson reprised his role as Varnell Hill in this workplace comedy that takes place behind the scenes of Varnell’s late-night talk show. Varnell Hill Show is an eight-episode series in which the former standup comedian tries to stay relevant in a rapidly changing entertainment landscape while struggling with controlling network executives, a bustling writers’ room, celebrities, personal issues, and his own ego.

The half-hour comedy features a return of Martin Lawrence and Bentley Kyle Evans, co-stars of the previous show. Varnell Hill is a beloved character who debuted in the sitcom in the 1990s.

Besides Davidson, the cast consists of Kym Whitley, Wendy Raquel Robinson, Nick Cafero, Emmanuel Hudson, and Chris Williams. Guests include Ms. Pat, Deon Cole, Damon Wayans, Mike Epps, and Omarion. Lawrence appears in various episodes of the season.

The series follows network executives with lofty ambitions, a writers’ room working overtime, celebrities, and crew members who have to cope with their host’s antics. Varnell believes he is the biggest star in the house.

It is a workplace comedy that mixes satirical elements, cutaways, and fourth-wall-breaking moments into one cocktail. Varnell Hill Show focuses on the mayhem, creative, corporate, or personal, involved in running a late-night show.

The show’s executive producers are BET Studios; Lawrence, Davidson, Jesse Collins, and Dionne Harmon for Jesse Collins Entertainment; Stacy Lyles, Rae Proctor, and Robert Lawrence for Runteldat Entertainment; and Mark Greenberg, Andrew Horne, and Evans for Harvest Studios. Evans is also the showrunner, writer, and director of the series.

All episodes of the series premiere on Paramount+ starting on September 1st.
