Pokimane recently called out Sabrina Carpenter during a stream over an alleged dismissal of a fan who did an Arabic chant during her Coachella performance.
According to Pokimane, Carpenter referred to “Burning Man” insultingly in response to the crowd’s reaction. Though the Twitch streamer acknowledged her unfamiliarity with the festival in question, her overall statement seemed to center on the disapproval of a fan celebrating his culture.
“It just hurt me to hear specifically that reaction to someone speaking about their culture,” Pokimane said in the livestream.
Her statement then moved on to her personal experience, in which her fellow students reacted negatively when she brought ethnic foods to the school cafeteria as a kid. Despite the criticism, Pokimane does not intend to attack Carpenter’s character.
“I think she was probably just frustrated. I don’t think this is a reason to assassinate her character or say she’s a terrible person,” she added.
Instead, she chose to use the incident to share a more significant message about cultural appreciation, asking everyone to stop harshly judging anything they do not understand.
“Just because you don’t get it doesn’t mean you need to put it down in any way, especially if it’s something cultural,” Pokimane said.
Sabrina Carpenter, on the other hand, has yet to address the claims.
