Racist White Student Charged With Felony After Attacking Black Girl and Using Racial Slur at Shawnee Mission High School

Shawnee Mission, Kansas, recently found itself at the center of a disheartening incident as a Black female high school student, identified as “Bre,” faced a racial attack while confronting her peers about alleged racist remarks. The disturbing encounter, captured on video and submitted to the Kansas City Defender, has ignited discussions about racism, accountability, and the response of educational institutions.

Bre courageously confronted two white classmates about their alleged use of racial slurs, particularly the term “slaves.” In the video, the white students appeared oblivious to Bre’s accusations, creating a tense confrontation. Bre, persistent in her call for accountability, urged the girls to acknowledge their words. The situation took a violent turn when a male student accompanying the girls aggressively intervened, using offensive language and escalating the confrontation into a physical altercation.

The disturbing incident resulted in Bre sustaining a broken nose, requiring hospitalization, while also facing a five-day suspension. Her assailant received a suspension as well. However, the punitive measures have sparked controversy, with students and the community expressing dissatisfaction, advocating for Bre, and demanding the expulsion of her attacker.

A notable response to the incident came in the form of a student-led walkout, symbolizing solidarity with Bre and condemning racism within the school. However, the school district’s handling of the situation has left many dissatisfied, as they perceive the issued statement to be inadequate in addressing the severity of the racial attack.

The district spokesperson stated, “It is a priority for the administration and the Board of the Shawnee Mission School District that all our students are treated with respect and feel welcome in our schools,” expressing sadness over the incident. Yet, the vague response has fueled frustration among students, parents, and the broader community.
