Republican Rep. Anna Paulina Luna of Florida is urging President Donald Trump to grant a pardon to an American soldier who was apprehended because he had allegedly earned more than $400,000 through betting on President Nicolas Maduro of Venezuela.
The representative realizes that her stance may not sit well with many people, but she maintains that the situation highlights inequality in the justice system, particularly the unbridled insider trading by some members of Congress.
“Maybe not a popular take, but I am calling for this guy to be pardoned,” said Luna on X. “Unless the DOJ plans on going after all the crooks in congress currently insider trading, this is simply skewed justice.”
While the representative acknowledges that she doesn’t agree with the soldier’s actions and that he needs to pay back whatever he made through the illegal bets, she contends that targeting him while congressional members continue to make money illegally every day is anything but fair.
“There is no ‘justice’ when guys like this get the book thrown at him, yet members are illegally profiting every day,” she continued. “Unless the DOJ plans on doing Congress next, this is not justice.”
She did not mention the soldier’s name in her statement.
