Rep. Yassamin Ansari, a Congresswoman from Arizona, says she is ramping up her efforts to impeach Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, arguing that his actions as head of the Pentagon warrant impeachment and that she shares those concerns.
“Well, we’re continuing to push this really heavily,” the Arizona Democrat said in a congressional hallway when asked about the current state of her impeachment effort.
Ansari, who became the first Iranian American Democrat elected to Congress, filed articles of impeachment against Hegseth in April 2026. They contain allegations of unauthorized military actions in Iran, deaths of civilians, including an attack on the girls’ school, mishandling sensitive information, and abuse of power.
“Every single day, it seems like Pete Hegseth does something that is impeachable in and of itself,” Ansari stated. “And I continue to be extremely concerned that this is the person who is running defense for the United States of America.”
She cited changes in the composition of the Pentagon’s senior military leadership as evidence that people within the Pentagon share the same concerns about their boss.
“We know that his own military leaders in the Pentagon have expressed significant concern and continue to leave the department,” Ansari said. “And so, I’m urging my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to sign on to these impeachment resolutions, articles of impeachment as soon as possible.”
Criticism comes amid the continuing efforts by Democrats to oppose military actions in Iran that began during the Trump administration. Hegseth leads the Pentagon and defends the administration’s position.
Impeachment efforts in this case are purely symbolic. Republicans have a majority in the House of Representatives, and impeachment articles from minority representatives rarely pass the floor without the leadership’s support.
When asked about another issue, Ansari stressed that her constituents dislike the automated license plate cameras by Flock Safety.
“Actually, in Arizona, people are very opposed to Flock cameras,” she said. “And one of the neighboring cities in Tempe, which is neighboring to Phoenix, just recently announced they’re going to stop using them.”
Ansari attributed this change to the local organizing.
“So, the outrage and activism from the citizen population is making a big difference,” Ansari said.
