Australian actress Samara Weaving spent Saturday soaking up the sun, reading stacks of Emma Frost comics, and sharing photos with a caption fans couldn’t help but read into: “Don’t read into it.”

The 34-year-old actress had just been confirmed to portray Emma Frost, the telepathic mutant also called the White Queen, in the reboot of Marvel Studios’ X-Men film. Jake Schreier, director of last year’s Thunderbolts, is set to direct the film, which is scheduled for release on May 5, 2028. Principal photography will start next year.

In the photo, Weaving wears a bikini and cat-eye sunglasses while reading a comic, with Emma Frost’s White Queen aura spread across the deck, including her solo series and one of Fantastic Four. It came almost 36 hours after Marvel Studios announced it on stage.

Those who know how to read between the lines can tell the story from the comic book in the photo. The stacks lean toward the Hellfire Club version of the character: an aristocratic villain who has preyed on young mutants long before she became one of the leaders of the X-Men. It has prompted speculations about whether Marvel is planning to introduce Emma Frost as a villain first.

It culminated a week of increasingly obvious teasers. The previous day, Weaving posted a series of photos from D23 in which she wore a white corset minidress off the shoulders and captioned them with “emma,” “frost,” and “xx,” before showing a panel of the White Queen wearing a white cape and corset. White defines this character.

Teasing started earlier than that. On the same day Deadline revealed the casting news on July 31, Weaving responded with a photo of herself in a white dress and captioned it with a single word: “Mutant.” Kathryn Newton commented, “Perfect.”

Weaving beat the fan campaign for Sydney Sweeney, which lasted months. According to Deadline, casting Frost required the most extensive search of any character in the reboot, as Schreier and Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige met numerous candidates before settling on Weaving.

January Jones played Emma Frost in 2011’s X-Men: First Class.

Among Weaving’s other credits are Ready or Not and its sequel, The Babysitter, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, and Scream VI. She joins a reboot cast that includes Christopher Abbott as Professor X, Kit Connor as Cyclops, and Sadie Sink as Jean Grey.

I make over $220 an hour while working from home and looking after my two kids. I was hesitant at first, but when my friend, who earns more than $35,000 a month, encouraged me to try it, I went for it. It’s been amazing! I have more time and money than I ever thought possible. Want to see how?
