The satirical body-horror “The Substance,” directed by Coralie Fargeat, is to get a U.S. re-release in theaters on January 17, 2025. Debuting in theaters on September 19, 2024, and hitting streaming on October 31 of the same year, the film has been met with high critical regard and several accolades, enough so that distributor Mubi will be bringing it back to over 350 theaters across the country.

The film stars Demi Moore as Elisabeth Sparkle, a former A-lister who, after being sacked from her fitness TV show by the very unscrupulous studio head Harvey, played by Dennis Quaid, resorts to this strange and mysterious drug called “The Substance.” It’s an experimental treatment that temporarily turns her into a younger version of herself, Sue, played by Margaret Qualley, on the condition that she toggles between her original self and transformed self every week. The story navigates through themes of identity, beauty standards, and the dangers of perfection.

“The Substance” has already taken its time conquering awards circuits these past 2024-2025 awarding seasons. During the 82nd Golden Globe Awards, Demi Moore secured Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, whereas, for the film it attained nominations like Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, Best Director: Coralie Fargeat, Best Supporting Actress: Margaret Qualley, and Best Screenplay.

The success is not only with the Golden Globes. During the Toronto International Film Festival 2024, the film won the People’s Choice Award-Midnight Madness while getting several nominations from the European Film Awards for Best Cinematography given to Benjamin Kra\run and Best Visual Effects.

Despite this critical success, “The Substance” suffered a major snub when director Coralie Fargeat was not nominated for the DGA Awards. Yet according to several industry analysts, that does not hurt the prospects of the film in the current awards season, including the upcoming nominations at the Academy Awards.

The re-release to theaters of “The Substance” is planned to capitalize on its awards momentum and grant audiences another chance to view the film in theaters. IndieWire’s report described it as one of the most talked-about horror titles of the 21st century, and such a theatrical return has been highly awaited.

For those who would like to see “The Substance,” it will be released in select theaters across the United States on January 17, 2025. With its critical success and the buzz surrounding its re-release, audiences are encouraged to secure tickets in advance.
