Abel Tesfaye, widely known as The Weeknd, has demonstrated his commitment to humanitarian causes by donating $2.5 million through his XO Humanitarian Fund to the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP).
As a Goodwill Ambassador for WFP, Tesfaye’s contribution aims to address the severe hunger crisis affecting hundreds of thousands of Palestinians in Gaza, who are on the brink of starvation due to the ongoing conflict.
Corinne Fleischer, WFP’s Director for the Middle East, North Africa, and Eastern Europe Region, emphasized the dire humanitarian situation caused by the conflict, stating, “This conflict has unleashed a humanitarian catastrophe beyond reckoning.” WFP is actively engaged in providing aid in Gaza, but a substantial increase in support is essential to meet the urgent hunger needs. Fleischer expressed gratitude for Tesfaye’s significant donation and called for continued support from donors to ensure the organization’s efforts reach as many people as possible.
The $2.5 million contribution from Tesfaye’s XO Humanitarian Fund will translate into 820 metric tons of food parcels, providing sustenance for over 173,000 Palestinians for two weeks. The food parcels include essential items such as fresh bread, canned food, pasta, and more. The urgency of the situation has prompted WFP to expedite its efforts to reach vulnerable populations during the ongoing humanitarian pause.
Individuals interested in supporting the WFP’s initiatives to provide meals to Palestinians can make donations directly through the organization’s website. Tesfaye’s generous donation serves as a noteworthy example, urging others to contribute and join the collective effort to alleviate the suffering of those affected by the conflict in Gaza.
