A couple employed by the University of Florida, 35-year-old Dustin Huff, and 31-year-old Yurui Xie, were arrested on Friday on charges of child abuse and child neglect, according to reporting from ABC news affiliate WCBJ.

The shocking revelation unfolded when their two children, aged 6 and 2, were found confined in makeshift cages. Both individuals are now on administrative leave from the university.

The investigation began after a harrowing disclosure by the 6-year-old to his teacher, expressing reluctance to go home due to a cage his father supposedly constructed to lock him in while his mother was at work. Subsequently, officers responded to the couple’s residence as part of a Department of Children and Families investigation.

According to the arrest report, the 6-year-old was confined in a cage crafted from a wooden bed frame whenever he wasn’t at school. The couple admitted to leaving the child alone in the house and claimed that the cage had been in their child’s room for a year.

Shockingly, officers discovered a second makeshift cage in the master bedroom closet, designed for the couple’s younger child. Both cages were equipped with rails and springs that posed a potential threat to the children if they moved inside.

University of Florida officials confirmed the employment of Xie and Huff, who worked as the Plant Pathology Department’s safety manager and a biological scientist for the UF/IFAS Horticultural Sciences Department, respectively. The university promptly placed them on administrative leave.

As this distressing case unfolds, experts emphasize the resilience of children in the face of trauma. Jamie Saunders, a lead therapist for the Child Advocacy Center of Gainesville, stressed the importance of recognizing the potential for healing and hope amid the complexity of trauma.

While the details of this case are deeply unsettling, it is crucial to consider the well-being and recovery of the affected children moving forward.
