White Woman Calls Out Racists Who Claim Their Love of Animals Makes Them Good: “If You Don’t Give a S*** About Systemic Racism…You Can’t Say That You’re a Good Person”

Kylie Brewer published an intriguing TikTok video entitled “The paradox of racists thinking they’re good people,” where she explained that loving and taking care of pets, the environment, or kids cannot justify not being empathetic towards humans.

In the beginning of the video, Brewer pointed out that many racists were not able to recognize themselves.

“So many racists don’t A) realize they’re racist or B) realize that they’re a bad person because they hide behind their ‘love of animals’ or their ‘love of the environment,’ or the fact that they love kids and they take good care of children, but a lot of them are also verbally abusive to children,” she said.

Next, Brewer brought up the issues of systemic racism and disappearance or killing of Black, brown, and Indigenous people.

“If you don’t give a s*** about systemic racism, or the Nolan Wells case, or any of the Black and brown people who have gone missing, the Indigenous people who have been murdered, you can’t say that you’re a good person,” Brewer explained.

Brewer argued that one’s love of animals cannot justify a lack of empathy toward other people.

“Your love of animals, unfortunately, does not compensate for your lack of empathy for your fellow human beings, because trust me, this does not go unnoticed,” she said.

While acknowledging that animals need care, Brewer pointed out that neglecting the problem one contributes to cannot be justified.

“And yes, while all living creatures are deserving of love and respect, and sure, it’s great that you do care for animals, if you are continuing to neglect problems that you yourself are contributing to, I will always think you’re a bad person,” she said.

Brewer, who is white, admitted that she was speaking from her experience.

“And this is coming from someone who is white, who was raised in this culture,” she said.

Brewer believed that white people had to look at themselves and analyze what they do and say.

“And you know what your responsibility is: to deconstruct and to learn what you’re doing wrong, to learn that what you’re doing and saying is not good,” she said.

Returning to the issue of loving pets, Brewer argued that it did not mean that one was a good person.

“And your love of animals doesn’t automatically make you a good person. Just because you have two dogs or a cat doesn’t mean that you’re amazing and you’re a great person,” she said.

Concluding the video, Brewer appealed directly to viewers.

“So do the work, please.” “I’m tired of explaining this,” she said.
