White Woman Says Dogs Have A “Long-Standing History” Of Being Used To “Brutalize People Of Color”

A TikTok video posted by Kylie Brewer entitled “The role of dogs in racial terror and v!olence” discusses how dogs have been used as tools of racial violence in America, and how the behavior of both the dogs and children mirrors the environments that they have grown up in.

Brewer starts off by quoting previous news coverage of children imitating racist behaviors of their parents.

“About children and toddlers mimicking their parents’ racist behaviors made it onto Fox News; I know that I have your attention,” Brewer said. “There is a long-standing history of people using dogs to brutalize people of color. Dogs were actually used in the assistance of capturing, quote, ‘runaway slaves’ or runaway enslaved people. Dogs have also been trained to literally go after certain suspects, to go after certain people based off of sight, not just scent alone.”

Brewer goes further to point out that this has happened across many different settings.

“This is a practice that has been common in police departments or, you know, on private property for a really long time,” Brewer said. “And that’s why you’ll often hear black people or brown people say, ‘huh, you know, that’s really weird. I went to my white friend’s house, and the dog was super nice and treated well everyone except for me, and I was the only person of color there.'”

The creator makes a difference between intentional racism and learned behavior and argues that neither animals nor children are able to do that.

“Yes, while children, babies and dogs cannot actually understand and practice racism, their behaviors nevertheless are indicative and a reflection of the type of environment they are raised in,” Brewer says.

The creator goes further and attributes much of this to a lack of exposure and proper training.

“If dogs are not around people of color, they are going to bark and growl at those people, especially if the owners are not training their dogs to behave properly,” Brewer said. “And the same goes for children. Children will oftentimes repeat racial slurs to people that they hear at home.”
