Amir Locke should be alive.
This past Wednesday, in the early morning hours, Minneapolis police entered an apartment via a no-knock warrant by using a key. After entering, they only announced their presence briefly, before a sleeping and likely startled Amir began to sit up, his weapon in hand – a gun his family and their attorney say he legally possessed.
The police began shooting at him immediately as he sat up. The officer who fired the fatal shot is Mark Hanneman. Amir was not named in the warrant, and wasn’t even a resident at the apartment – he was staying with family. Still, within seconds he was dead. The body cam footage is horrifying. What was he thinking in those last seconds? Did he ever even have a chance to realize what was happening?

Another Black man, guilty of no crime, was robbed of his life while simultaneously being denied his second amendment and civil rights. All he did was fall asleep on a family member’s couch.
He had an entire lifetime ahead of him. His name is Amir Locke. He should be alive.
