A TikTok user by the name Brittany Norris described how she was involved in a long custody battle with an ex-partner, leading to a defamation lawsuit she claims followed after she shared some details about him online.
In the video, Norris said she has children with two different men and pointed out that the arrangements differ in the two cases. “I have two baby daddies. Okay, I’ll be the first to say, my early 20s not the smartest,” she began.
Regarding one of her relationships, Norris said the arrangements worked out nicely. “One baby daddy I get along with very well. I had full custody of my daughter. Now me and him share joint custody. Normal. We co-parent very well. As you should,” she said.
However, she went on to describe another relationship which she described as problematic. “That’s where Judas comes in. Me and Judas had a lot of issues in our relationship. I’m not gonna go into those. We were together for a while. He loved my daughter.”
Norris believes she failed to recognize any red flags during the relationship. “I also should’ve seen it was a red flag when he wanted to push out my other baby daddy so he could adopt my daughter,” she explained.
According to her, the end of the relationship centered on her daughter and not herself. “When I left, he wasn’t sad that I was leaving him. He was sad that I wasn’t letting him see my daughter anymore. There are reasons behind it,” she said.
After returning to her hometown, Norris said she and her ex agreed on a schedule. “Our plan is to just flip-flop every week. I have our son for a week. He came down and got him. I was like, I don’t want to go through court. He said Yes, I agree.”
According to Norris, she turned down his requests to meet her daughter. “He still kept wanting to see my daughter, but I said no,” she said.
However, the arrangement fell through, and things took a turn for the worse. “When it was his time for visitation, he took my son, flew back out of state, and then I got served. I also lost my car. I was driving the car he bought me, but we used my old car as a down payment, and we got like six grand from it, then took it back,” she said.
Tensions rose between her and her daughter’s former stepmom and her ex’s wife. “At that time, my daughter’s dad was married to a girl. I’m not sure what she wanted. It turns out Judas’s wife and my daughter’s ex-stepmom got along really well. They were in a group chat all day, talking about me,” she said.
She claimed she learned of a trip involving her daughter from her daughter’s father. “One day my daughter was taken out of school. Her dad called me and said stepmom is taking her out of state for your son’s birthday party. They’re staying at your old house with Judas. He told me not to tell you, but I have to tell you,” she said.
Norris said she was upset about not being invited to the party, too. “I’m furious. What made me more angry is that he told people he invited me to the birthday, offered to pay flight and hotel, but I said no,” she said.
A friend’s statement stuck with her. “Once you take everything from someone, they have nothing left to lose,” the friend said. This made Norris feel like she had nothing else to lose and posted on TikTok.
She never expected to be sued for defamation because she believed she was telling the truth. “Never thought I’d be sued for defamation, because it wasn’t lies. This was two years ago, and I had just moved back home. I had my car taken. I had no money, just got my son back.”
She said she did not like the idea of going to court. “I knew I’d have to go to court, and I felt like I was in trouble. I don’t like feeling like a bad person. Even thinking about it makes me nervous,” she said.
The situation seemed urgent. “I got the defamation summons the day after I got it. The court date was the next Monday after I got it. I think it was a fast date. I had no car, no money, no way to go to court,” she said.
Even the summons frightened her. “In the paper, it said you could go to jail. I was terrified. Do I regret it? No, but I don’t want to go to jail.”
Unable to appear before the court, Norris responded by mail. “I notarized everything and sent it back,” she said.
Later she found out the filing involved more than just defamation. “Turns out it was both defamation and the co-parenting plan. I didn’t know that until they filed it, and the judge dismissed it. He said they were two separate cases. So I saw that it wasn’t just defamation; it was the co-parenting issue as well.”
Norris concluded her story by defending her actions. “I was scared,” she said. “I was stupid. I regret it. You wanted the full story. Here it is. I wasn’t the smartest, but do I deserve this? No, I don’t.”
