Australian Runner Natasha Ward Passed Away At 21

Australian middle-distance runner Natasha Ward passed away aged 21, according to an announcement made by her club and state athletics organization, throwing the nation’s track community into mourning.

NSW Athletics and Sutherland District Athletics Club, based in Sydney, made the announcement together on July 30, according to CBS12. Neither organization disclosed the cause of her death, which remains unclear, according to CBS12 and Marathon Handbook.

According to Marathon Handbook, Natasha Ward mostly ran the 400, 800, and 1,500 meters. As a junior, she won a medal in the 1,500 at the New South Wales All Schools Championships before earning a 1,500 medal at the UniSport Nationals in 2023 and bronze in the 800 at the same championships in April, as per Marathon Handbook.

According to Marathon Handbook, she participated in the 2024 Australian Athletics Championships where she competed in the same events as other famous Australian runners Morgan Mitchell and Claudia Hollingsworth.

According to the joint statement from the two organizations, besides her track achievements, Natasha Ward was “a greatly loved member of our community” with a very friendly and cheerful nature, as per Yahoo News Australia. Her “magnetic smile and warm personality” would make Australian athletics unforgettable, and her passion and determination inspired her training partners, according to Marathon Handbook.

Both organizations extended their sympathies to Natasha Ward’s family, friends, and everyone else who knew her, according to Yahoo News Australia.

Other fellow Australian runner Nathan Breen described the news as devastating and sent his thoughts to Ward’s family and friends. According to Marathon Handbook, Natasha Ward studied exercise and sports science at Macquarie University in Sydney, according to her LinkedIn profile. She was also actively participating in the club’s summer and winter running program, according to the same report.
