Amazon MGM Studios has unveiled the first teaser trailer for The Thomas Crown Affair, a heist drama starring and directed by Academy Award winner Michael B. Jordan. The movie hits theaters exclusively on March 5, 2027.
Following the movie’s debut poster released a day ago under the slogan “Revenge is a work of art,” the poster also reveals the movie is filmed for IMAX.
Jordan is both director and lead in the movie. Amazon MGM describes the film as a visually stunning, sensual, and surprisingly emotional heist thriller, “where the most dangerous man in the room is the one nobody’s watching,” as stated in the official movie synopsis released by Amazon MGM Studios.
Jordan plays Thomas Crown, a billionaire who commits a robbery involving a priceless piece of art when the police are busy chasing down another heist, to be pursued by a relentless insurance investigator played by Adria Arjona, according to ComingSoon.net. Other cast members include Kenneth Branagh, Lily Gladstone, Danai Gurira, and Pilou Asbæk.
This is Jordan’s second feature film as a director, the first being Creed III, which he released in 2023. This movie is also his first major release since he won the Best Actor Oscar in March.
As NBC News reports, Jordan has just become the sixth Black man ever to win the Best Actor Oscar at the 98th Oscars, in the category, for his role as twins Smoke and Stack in Ryan Coogler’s Sinners. The Associated Press reports this movie won four Oscars on that night.
Jordan describes the movie as the result of many years of ambition rather than a mere remake. Speaking after the Oscar nomination, he described it as “a baby of mine that I’ve been wanting to make,” according to JoBlo. In other words, the movie is expected to be a reimagining rather than a remake of The Thomas Crown Affair.
As The Hollywood Reporter reports, Amazon MGM screened footage from the movie at CinemaCon in April. Jordan addressed the exhibitors, saying, “I’ve been daydreaming of making this movie for years.” At the same time, Grammy Award winner Jon Batiste composed the movie’s score and performed the song “The Windmills of Your Mind,” which won the Oscar for Best Original Song in 1968 for the 1968 version of the movie. This way, Batiste announced his participation in composing the movie’s music.
According to the presentation’s trade coverage, Jordan chases down Arjona in the movie. Branagh plays the movie’s antagonist, and Crown’s motivation is to recover artifacts stolen, misappropriated, and sold over the centuries from their creators, according to Screen Rant.
Drew Pearce and Jason Hall wrote the screenplay, while the storyline was written by Alan R. Trustman and Pearce, based on Trustman’s screenplay for the 1968 version of the movie. Jordan produces the movie together with Elizabeth Raposo, Marc Toberoff, Patrick McCormick, and Charles Roven. Hall and Trustman are the executive producers of the movie. Principal photography takes place in London, according to Decked Out Magazine. Outlier Society, Atlas Entertainment, and Toberoff Productions produce the movie.
Arjona joined the movie’s production after Taylor Russell left the cast opposite Jordan shortly after filming began, as ComingSoon.net reports.
The Thomas Crown Affair is the third version of the story adapted for the big screen. Norman Jewison directed the original in 1968, starring Steve McQueen and Faye Dunaway. John McTiernan remade it in 1999 with Pierce Brosnan and Rene Russo starring. The 1968 movie received two Oscar nominations.
The Thomas Crown Affair releases in U.S. theaters on March 5, 2027.
