AOC Pressed On Whether Benjamin Netanyahu Should Be Arrested In New York: “War Criminals Should Be Held Accountable”

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez said the United States should abide by the International Criminal Court (ICC) conclusions if asked whether Benjamin Netanyahu should be arrested the next time he sets foot in the country.

Ocasio-Cortez was being interviewed at the Capitol by Luke Radel, a White House correspondent for MeidasTouch. He pointed out that the U.N. General Assembly would start in New York City in a week, and Netanyahu was expected to attend.

“Congresswoman, in New York City next week, one week from today, the U.N. General Assembly will start, and Benjamin Netanyahu is expected to attend,” Radel said. “Do you believe he should be arrested when he steps foot on U.S. soil?”

“I mean, I believe that he’s been, I mean, the latest development now from the ICC is what he’s been indicted,” Ocasio-Cortez said. “He’s wanted by the ICC. I think that what we should be doing is being, I think we should be in alignment with the findings of the International Criminal Court. If there’s a warrant out, then there’s a warrant out.”

Then she was asked specifically about Netanyahu’s arrest.

“So should he be arrested when he steps on U.S. soil?” he asked.

“If there is a warrant, well, here’s the deal,” Ocasio-Cortez said. “The United States, shamefully, is not a signatory onto the ICC. We should be. The United States should be, I believe, a participant in the ICC. I think we should be a participant in our global justice system. We are not a signatory.”

Then she distinguished between the idea and the law.

“So when there’s the question of what should happen in a philosophical sense, I think war criminals should be held accountable,” she said. “And then there’s the legal grounds. And I’m not a lawyer.”
