Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC) has revealed that she has secured over $12 million in government money for community-driven projects in the Bronx and Queens. The allocation attempts to address a variety of critical needs, ranging from violence prevention to infrastructure improvement while catering to a varied demographic in New York’s 14th Congressional District. One of the primary initiatives targeted for funding is the creation of a violence prevention-focused community center in Astoria. MALIKAH, a nonprofit organization with a long history of assisting the Astoria community, will receive $1.2 million to purchase a three-story mixed-use property. This facility will offer important services such as mental health support, civil education, economic empowerment initiatives, and self-defense training, to proactively address societal difficulties faced by working-class people.

The Riverbay Fund, Inc. will receive $1.5 million for the transformation and refurbishment of an existing space into the Northeast Bronx Youth Center. This facility will act as a hub for education, recreation, culture, arts, and wellness programs aimed at children, adolescents, and young adults in the Northeast Bronx, promoting personal growth and community harmony.

In addition, the Variety Boys and Girls Club of Queens will get $1.17 million to demolish and rebuild a new facility in Astoria, increasing its capacity to serve adolescents and families in Long Island City and Astoria through after-school programs, summer camps, and athletic activities.

The funding also prioritizes vital infrastructure improvements, such as GrowNYC’s development of the New York State Regional Food Hub, which aims to enhance food distribution to neglected communities while simultaneously helping regional farmers.

Grants have also been given for accessibility modifications, such as the ADA restroom upgrade at the NY Public Library’s Pelham Bay branch and elevator replacement at Middletown Plaza, to meet the needs of users and people with limited mobility.

Furthermore, the funds will be used to revamp public areas in New York City Housing Authority developments, making them safer and more engaging for residents, particularly children, in a variety of communities.

The allotment also includes monies for environmental programs, such as the Billion Oyster Project’s Flushing Bay Oyster Reef, which aims to address environmental justice disparities while simultaneously providing educational opportunities for local students.

Transportation and infrastructure safety are also addressed, with capital improvements planned for Westchester Square Plaza and Astoria Boulevard that aim to improve pedestrian safety and public places.

The Hutchinson River Restoration Project will receive $50,000 to carry out projects such as characterizing shoreline pollution, engaging in debris cleanup efforts, and raising public awareness of environmental issues along the Hutchinson River and its watershed.

Ocasio-Cortez emphasized her excitement for the beneficial impact these investments will have on the neighborhood, underlining her dedication to securing resources that serve the different needs of people in the 14th Congressional District.
