Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez responded to President Donald Trump’s criticism of Americans who reject data centers by calling for one to be built at his Mar-a-Lago property.
According to a statement by Trump on Truth Social on Aug. 31, 2026, places that reject data centers risk being “backwards and poor,” as such projects create employment opportunities, tax money, have the potential to reduce taxes, and are necessary for the United States to stay ahead of China in terms of AI advancement.
MeidasTouch reporter Pablo Manriquez raised this with Ocasio-Cortez in an interview.
“What do you make of Trump saying Americans who oppose data centers are backwards and poor?” Manriquez queried.
“Oh, I mean, how about we put one in Mar-a-Lago?” Ocasio-Cortez said. “I love that. Let’s put a data center at Mar-a-Lago, and we’ll see how backwards and poor he is in response to that.”
