‘AVATAR: THE WAY OF WATER’ HAS SURPASSED $1 BILLION AT THE GLOBAL BOX OFFICE WHILE BEING BOYCOTTED

James Cameron’s ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’ has surpassed $1 billion at the global box office in twelve days. It becomes the sixth fast film to reach this mark and the 52nd film to ever reach $1 billion at the worldwide box office.

Avatar: The Way of Water has become the third highest-grossing film of 2022 and the fourth highest-grossing film of the pandemic era.

While this is an amazing accomplishment, Cameron has admitted that ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’ needs to make $2 billion to break even, according to Variety. The film reportedly has to be the third or fourth-highest-grossing film of all time to break even.

Cameron’s new expensive film would have to overtake his own “Titanic” ($2.1 billion), “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” ($2.07 billion), and “Avengers: Infinity War” ($2.05 billion) at the global box office.

The film stars Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, and Kate Winslet. It’s also set more than a decade after the events of the first film, “Avatar: The Way of Water” which begins to tell the story of the Sully family (Jake, Neytiri, and their kids), the trouble that follows them, the lengths they go to keep each other safe, the battles they fight to stay alive,  and the tragedies they endure.

While Cameron’s film crosses the $1 billion threshold, it’s currently being boycotted by some Indigenous activists, who are calling out Cameron’s past racist comments.

In 2010 Cameron said the Lakota, who inspired the film, should have “fought harder” against colonialism. Which some would say is very hypocritical of Cameron since Avatar’s storyline is similar to how Indigenous communities are still fighting for the protection of their lands and their sovereignty.
