A 20-year-old Acieiona McEwan took the stand this week to defend her boyfriend, Traveon Hughes Sr., after he was convicted of purposefully shoving a baby wipe down the throat of their 13-week-old son. Hughes, who was 18 at the time of the incident, was found guilty of murder, involuntary manslaughter, and child endangerment by a jury, a decision McEwan vehemently opposed.

The tragic incident occurred just two days after the couple moved from Chicago to Cleveland. On the day of the baby’s death, McEwan was at work while Hughes was at home with their infant son, his brother, and his girlfriend. According to Hughes’ testimony, he had replaced a milk-soaked bib with a baby wipe and left the room to tend to injuries he sustained from being shot 19 times in Chicago. Hughes claimed that upon his return, he found his son choking on the wipe. Despite paramedics’ efforts, the baby was pronounced dead at the hospital, with the wipe still lodged in his throat.

During the trial, Hughes maintained that the baby had accidentally choked on the wipe, insisting that he had no intention of harming his son. His defense attorney argued that the prosecution failed to prove that Hughes had acted recklessly or with purpose. However, the jury was convinced by the prosecution’s argument that Hughes had intentionally used the wipe to silence the crying infant.

Taking the stand during the sentencing, McEwan fiercely criticized the court’s decision. “God gets the last word,” she declared, placing the blame for her son’s death on medical professionals rather than Hughes. McEwan’s passionate defense of Hughes was echoed by his mother, Sandra Norwood, who vowed to continue fighting for what she believes is true justice. “Ohio is going to get sick of me because justice will prevail,” she stated.

Prosecutors argued that Hughes’ actions were deliberate and intended to stop the baby from crying, leading to his conviction. Despite the court’s verdict, McEwan stood firm in her belief that Hughes was innocent and that the real blame lay elsewhere.

“Y’all are making a mistake, all know what y’all did to my child, and y’all are not going to get away with this,” McEwan asserted, promising to challenge the court’s decision and seeking vindication for Hughes.
