A woman aged 59 from Rio de Janeiro died Sunday after she slipped and fell about 30 meters (98 feet) from a cliff at a tourist spot in Maric, Brazil, while spraying insect repellent on her leg.
Rosemary Suzart Garcia was part of a group of 15 visitors who were at the Grutas do Spar, also known as the Spar Caves, at the time of the incident that morning, June 14th. She had been walking along a short path to an anchorage point while preparing for an abseiling trip, and witnesses said that she was already wearing a helmet and gloves.
Witnesses said that Mrs. Garcia raised her leg to spray insect repellent on it and lost her footing, plunging off the steep cliff edge.
Witness Mr. Maximino told investigators that a guide tried to grab Mrs. Garcia to save her, but came very close to falling over as well. “It all happened very quickly,” Maximino said. “She had just finished applying the insect repellent.”
Firefighters confirmed Mrs. Garcia was dead at the scene.
Maximino also said it was difficult to find Mrs. Garcia’s family. “I only managed to locate her children at almost 2 a.m. to break the news. Until then, we had no contact with any family members,” he told authorities.
The Spar Caves, an ex-feldspar and mica mine that shut down about 50 years ago, was converted into a tourist attraction, after which it began showcasing the natural lake, various rock formations, and a 40-meter-high (131-foot) cave used for abseiling.
Police are investigating the death.
