The United States is one step closer to winning back-to-back Concacaf Nations League titles after routing archrival Mexico 3-0 on Thursday evening, securing a spot in Sunday’s final against Canada.

Christian Pulisic scored a brace at Allegiant Stadium before former FC Dallas striker Ricardo Pepi iced the game shortly after coming on as a second-half substitute for debutant Folarin Balogun.

United States Victory Comes At A Price

However, the outcome came at a cost, as both teams were reduced to nine men during a tense second half that included four red cards.

Head referee Iván Barton dismissed USMNT midfielder Weston McKennie and right back Sergio Dest following separate big brawls – two huge losses Canada will look to exploit when a trophy is on the line.

What was the breaking news at Halftime?

If the on-field action wasn’t exciting enough, it was revealed during the first half that Gregg Berhalter, the USMNT’s head coach for the 2022 World Cup cycle, would be returning to his post soon after a six-month absence. Meanwhile, B.J. Callaghan, the USMNT’s second interim coach since a Round-of-16 finish in Qatar, led the team against El Tri.

The match was then abandoned with 12 minutes of second-half stoppage time remaining due to Mexican fans’ continued use of a homophobic chant.
