She kindly took the time to answer a few of our burning animation questions and we are delighted to share our interview with her down below.
WTB: Can you share the inspiration before the creation of the series and what motivated you to bring the series to life?
Okamoto: It basically started because I absolutely love Shōnen manga and I wanted to make her drawing moves her self.
WTB: The Plot of the anime balances aspects of Mecha and supernatural abilities. How did you balance these two aspects in terms of storytelling and animation?
Okamoto: The Mecha’s are basically like humans. They run on human emotions and work with the humans so that was the important thing to balance in the series.
WTB: Mecha-Ude incorporates elements of both traditional hand-drawn animation and digital techniques. How do you blend these animation approaches into your desired visual results?
Okamoto: The action scenes are all first drawn by hand, the Mecha’s are CG and the humans are always drawn in 2D so they will combine all that together there are also times where they animate some of the action scenes in 2D as well.
WTB: Were there any specific animation techniques or innovations you employed in Mecha-Ude to achieve certain visual or narrative effects?
Okamoto: The Mecha Ude visually are also characters so the main one has an eye. So that was important visually to represent that.
WTB: Can you describe the process of directing the animation for Mecha-Ude?How did you work with the animators and other team members to bring the action sequences and character interactions to life?
Okamoto: The main part of Mecha is to get the characters to move as much as possible and while they do have a base design, depending on the animator it might change a little bit but I am okay with that at times. I want them to move as much as possible and this is my main thing as a director.
WTB: What are you more excited for the audience to see and experience when the anime series of Mecha-Ude is released? What do you want them to take away from the series?
Okamoto: It’s a Shōnen manga so I am hoping that the audience can watch that and feel like they can work a little hard the next day and keep working and move forward.
