Britney Spears is currently facing a misdemeanor DUI charge following an indictment for one count under Vehicle Code 23152, according to Us Weekly.
The pop star was arrested on March 4, around 9:30 p.m., by the California Highway Patrol in Ventura County. According to the report, Spears was booked by the county sheriff’s department at approximately 3 a.m. and released at around 6 a.m., as per the inmate records.
She is scheduled to appear at the Ventura County Superior Court for arraignment on Monday, May 4. According to the prosecutor, Spears is not required to be present at the court proceeding because it is a misdemeanor case, and she can be represented by her lawyer.
They intend to offer her a plea bargain termed a wet reckless for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, as she has never been convicted of a DUI offense, she has a low blood alcohol content, and she did not get into an accident while driving.
“This offer will be extended to Ms. Spears on Monday,” the district attorney’s office told Us Weekly.
According to officials, if Spears accepts the plea deal, she is expected to serve 12 months’ probation, receive credit for time already spent in custody, complete DUI school, and pay any necessary fines.
They indicated that the offer is normally made to defendants who exhibit a desire to address their problem through treatment programs for drug and alcohol addiction.
Spears voluntarily checked herself into a rehab facility at the beginning of this month, although Page Six reports the decision had nothing to do with substance abuse.
In her statement released to People Magazine after last month’s arrest, she described the situation as “unfortunate” and “completely inexcusable.”
“Britney is going to take the right steps and comply with the law, and hopefully this can be the first step in long overdue change that needs to occur in Britney’s life,” her spokesperson said.
