Mortal Kombat’s Joe Taslim shared what he feels it means to be “the chosen one” and his first thoughts when putting on the costume to play iconic antihero Sub-Zero.

Since 1992, Mortal Kombat has been the game people have either been too afraid to play or too excited to play. From the diverse selection of characters to the highly detailed storyline and the most elaborate finishing moves, Mortal Kombat will go down in video game history.
The game is so influential that studios decided to come back with another feature film which will premiere in theaters on April 23.
During a chat with WhereIsTheBuzz reporter Rocky Harris, Taslim, who plays Sub-Zero, discussed what it was like putting his character’s costume on for the first time.
“Well, the first time I wore the suit, it was heavy,” Taslim said laughingly. “Okay, it was heavy, at the same time, I looked myself in the mirror…that was the first time I felt like…this is happening. You know? This is happening. The feeling that I am Sub-Zero, it’s just real. It’s real. But, it was heavy. So, I was a bit worried like ‘how am I going to be able to fight in this costume?’”
Taslim added that there were two costumes: one that was lighter and the other was heavier and more bulky. He said he knew he be able to fight easier with the lighter suit. Nevertheless, he called the entire experience “unreal.”
“It’s not a birthmark, it means you were chosen” is a quote used in the Mortal Kombat film. For Taslim, being the chosen one means setting an example for those around you. “Well, I’m chosen to play Sub-Zero; that’s something for sure,” Taslim said jokingly.
“The word you were chosen I think comes with a lot of responsibility for sure, right? When you are chosen to represent someone, to represent a community, it means that you have to be a role model. You’ve got to give good example. It could feel like a burden but at the same time, but you know, this is what makes us alive. It’s because we want to live the life that people will remember. That we remember We’ve got to give good examples. To be the chosen one, you need to invest more, give more, help more. And why you are the chosen one is because God knows, nature knows that you can do it. It’s as simple as that.”
