Kat Dennings Says She Refused a “2 Broke Girls” Bra Scene: “You Don’t Pay Me Enough”

Kat Dennings recounts an episode of “2 Broke Girls” when she got out of a scene that required her and Beth Behrs to run around the set in their bras.

In a TikTok video, Kat Dennings says that the episode appeared in the script for the first or second season on CBS. The idea was that the two actresses, Max and Caroline, should run around their apartment set only in bras.

After the table read, the actress says she went to Michael Patrick King, the showrunner, and said, “You don’t pay me enough for a bra scene.” This episode was then cut the very next day.

Opening the video, she says she had free time on set.

“Okay. I have a little time at work, and I know I’ve been telling kind of these, like, crazy stories lately, and I thought of one more,” Dennings said. “By the way, I always thought I looked horrible in yellow. But do I? Yes. Yes, I do.”

She also mentions that the show is reaching a new audience.

“I also noticed ‘2 Broke Girls’ seems to be having kind of a some sort of a resurgence with the younger crowd. Young people seem to be discovering it somehow,” she added.

Then she describes the show’s table-read process.

“At the beginning of ‘2 Broke Girls,’ I think this must have been, like, season one or two, you have a table read. That’s the first day of work. You go, and you read the whole episode in front of the studio and network and all of the writers,” she said. “And then the studio and network gives their notes, like, what they might want to change in the episode. And then the writers address those notes in the next rewrite for the next day.”

She then describes the episode in question.

“So in one of the episodes, there was a scene where Max and Caroline are just wearing bras. They were just wearing bras, and they were running around in the apartment set. And there the scene was just us wearing bras,” Dennings said.

She mentioned that she had almost no influence at the time.

“And remember, I was not someone who had, like, a lot of pull at that time to say, like, I don’t want to do this, because we were young and very lucky to be on a show that was successful,” she said.

That is why she challenged it.

“But after the table read, I went over to our showrunner, Michael Patrick King. And I said, I’m gonna need you to take out the bra scene or have us wearing clothes during the scene. And he said, ‘No, I mean, this is the scene. And I said, ‘You don’t pay me enough for a bra scene,’ Dennings said. “And sure enough, the next day, the bra scene was gone.”

She closed with a lesson.

“Never underestimate yourself is the moral of the story,” she concluded. “And they weren’t paying me enough. Although I don’t think anyone could.”
