Marlowe Reveals New Project “Alexithymia,” Calls “Hit Different” a Taste of “the Bigger Picture That’s Yet to Come”

Marlowe claims that her song, “Hit Different,” contains the clearest representation of the sound she has been developing during the past ten years and is a teaser to her upcoming album, which will appear next month.

“My single ‘Hit Different’ fits into my sound more than anything I’ve ever released,” Marlowe said. “I think I have around 500 songs (unreleased) in my catalog at the moment. I’ve been curating my sonic identity for the last 10 years.”

The track will serve as a preview for “Alexithymia,” an upcoming project scheduled for release next month.

“This specific record is a preview of my project coming out next month called ‘Alexithymia,'” she said. “I think it gives a taste of the bigger picture that’s yet to come.”

Asked which artist she would want to collaborate with without any logistical constraints, Marlowe named Lana Del Rey, recalling a chance encounter at the Los Angeles restaurant Jon & Vinny’s.

“I think I’d choose Lana Del Rey,” Marlowe said. “She’s the most beautiful soul I’ve ever met, inside and out. I saw her one time at Jon & Vinny’s while having dinner. She was sitting directly behind me. After she finished eating, I turned around and told her how inspiring she was to me, especially being a singer. Afterwards she sat with me and we spoke about music for a half an hour. She’s immensely talented.”

Marlowe said she envisions a collaboration with Del Rey producing an upbeat, sun-soaked sound.

“I think we’d create something uptempo, some dreamy, sun-soaked alternative pop,” she said. “Analog warmth with ethereal layered vocals. That’d be sick. Some ‘doin’ time’ energy.”

Marlowe is frequently compared to pop star Ariana Grande, a comparison she says holds up vocally but not artistically.

“Everyone says Ariana Grande,” Marlowe said. “I hear it sometimes vocally, but in terms of our artists’ identities, I’m not too sure. We definitely have similar vocal textures and tones, which is a HUGE compliment. She’s a vocal GOD. But musically, I think it misses the mark.”

Marlowe credited four artists, Lady Gaga, Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston, and Adele, with shaping her development as a musician, each contributing a distinct lesson to her artistry.

“These are artists that I’ve looked up to since I was young who really shaped me as a creative,” she said. “Lady Gaga taught me to be fearless, Mariah taught me vocal arrangement, Whitney showed me emotional delivery & Adele demonstrated vulnerability. Pulling from these icons built me into the artist I am today.”
