The Marshall Police Department has assumed responsibility for an investigation following allegations of an improper relationship between a teacher and a 16-year-old student, which the Marshall Independent School District (MISD) Police Department brought to our attention on February 14, 2024.

The investigation was prompted by a notification from the MISD Superintendent, who obtained the information via MISD School Board President Brad Burris. The claims center on text messages and images exchanged by the teacher and the student, some of which were sexually explicit.

Margaret Claire Burris, 23, was arrested based on evidence obtained after a forensic assessment of the student’s cell phone. Burris was arrested this morning (Saturday, February 17) and charged with one count of Improper Relationship Between Educator and Student, a second-degree felony.

The investigation into this situation is still in the early stages. As a result, more accusations may be brought against the accused in due course. The Marshall Police Department is requesting anyone with additional information or evidence regarding this case to come forward.

“We take these allegations very seriously and are committed to getting to the bottom of this matter,” said a spokesperson for the Marshall Police Department. “We encourage anyone who has additional information to contact us directly at 903-935-4575.”

For those who wish to remain anonymous, tips can be submitted to Crime Stoppers at 903-935-9969, via the P3 mobile app, or by scanning the attached QR code. Those who provide information leading to an arrest through Crime Stoppers or the P3 mobile app may be eligible for a cash reward.

As the investigation continues, the community is urged to stay vigilant and report any suspicious activities or information related to this case. The safety and well-being of our students is our top priority, and we will not rest until justice is served.
