Natalie Johnson, the communications director for Rep. Nancy Mace in 2021, said she still finds it funny that she gets under the South Carolina Republican’s skin more than five years after she left Mace’s office. This came up during a televised debate in which commentator Mehdi Hasan referred to Johnson as the one who made allegations against Mace regarding her drinking habits.

Writing on X, Natalie Johnson stated that she currently lives in Wyoming, keeping herself busy with skiing and hiking, but is “still haunting this psycho 5+ years later.”

The debate took place on Thursday during Piers Morgan Uncensored, a talk show program in which Morgan repeatedly tried to keep the discussion moving even as both guests kept interrupting each other. They had initially been debating radical Islamism, and Hasan referred to Mace as a “racist bigot” right to her face.

He then referred to an artificial intelligence video clip that Mace uploaded during her gubernatorial campaign.

“Why did you put out an AI video pretending Trump endorsed you? Were you drunk when you did that?” asked Hasan.

“I do not drink. That’s disgusting. You’re defaming me,” Mace retorted.

She dismissed the video clip itself as “a picture that was animated.”

Hasan referred to a February New York Magazine story which described Mace’s increased drinking and how she had sent her staffers to the liquor store at night to ensure continuous partying at her house.

“Your former comms director told New York Magazine you drank all day. Staffers bought you alcohol at 2 a.m. Take it up with her,” said Hasan.

“Name the person!” Mace said.

“Natalie Johnson. Your former comms director,” Hasan answered.

Hasan also said Johnson claimed Mace drinks so much that interns and junior staffers rush to Congressional Liquor in the middle of the day so Mace can drink during town halls. Mace continued to deny the claim and referred to the attack as “disgusting” toward a woman.

The video Hasan referred to dates back to Mace’s Republican Primary for Governor. On May 29th, Mace had posted on social media that Donald Trump did not endorse Lt. Governor Pamela Evette. The post also contained an AI video of the two, giving each other a thumbs up. Within hours, Donald Trump had endorsed Evette. At this point, CNN’s Dana Bash pushed Mace for details on the images, and she said she has real pictures with the President.

Mace failed to win in the June 9th primary. AG Alan Wilson won the nomination for the June 23 runoff election with 68.6% of the vote.

Natalie Johnson has also spoken out about her former boss on other occasions. In December 2024, she had written on X that Mace had informed staff, including Johnson herself, during the January 6 Capitol riot that she wished to be punched by a rioter so that she could make it to TV.
